Three of the AFC East’s four clubs fall under this non-championship category in 2019 but they did not universally see their confidence grow over draft weekend. A look at the latest FanPulse numbers — sign up here if you also want to participate in future surveys — shows this:As can be seen, three of the division’s four fan bases saw their confidence increase. Followers of the world champion Patriots went from 82% up to 91%, while the Bills and Dolphins increased their respective scores by 3% and 9%, respectively. And then, there is the Jets: despite picking arguably the best overall player in the draft — defensive tackle Quinnen Williams — their fans’ confidence went down by six points.“Jets fans seemed excited about the team’s free agent spending spree. Confidence doubled between the end of the season and the post-free agency period. Fans seem less enthused about the Draft class,” said John Butchko, managing editor at Pats Pulpit’s sister site Gang Green Nation about the fan bases dip in confidence following the draft. “Despite picking Quinnen Williams, fan confidence went down.”On the other side of the spectrum are the Patriots and the Dolphins; the latter of which also used the draft to acquire former top-10 draft pick Josh Rosen as their presumed new starting quarterback. “Dolphins fans are getting behind the idea that the team is in a thought-out, deliberate rebuild. There are still plenty that do not think it will work, but free agency and the draft have made fans see that there is at least a plan in place Matthew Slater Jersey ,” Kevin Nogle of The Phinsider said.“The Dolphins have torn apart the team and are concentrating on getting value and getting younger talent that can grow together into a sustained winning team,” Kevin continued. “It may mean a really ugly 2019 — though I think there is more talent on this team than people realize — but to get the salary cap back under control, the core of the team younger, and get out of a cycle of mediocrity, ugly may be needed. If 2019 is ugly, Dolphins fans will just look at what the team has done this offseason to prepare for 2020 when they will likely have 12 draft picks and over $120 million in cap space before making any moves.”Bills fans also become more confident in their team following the draft. “Most Bills fans think the team is headed in the right direction after they went all-out in free agency, completely revamping the offensive line and wide receiver corps. In the draft, Buffalo added a stud in Ed Oliver to replace Kyle Williams,” analyzed Buffalo Rumblings managing editor Matt Warren about Buffalo’s recent surge in fan base confidence.“With the added protection and weapons, Bills fans hope Josh Allen can take the next step on offense with a stout defense,” Matt continued. “Add in that Brian Daboll has been a consistent presence for Allen during his first year and a half as the quarterback Womens Ryan Allen Jersey , and expectations are higher than they have been in a while for Bills fans.”With the Dolphins and Bills having productive free agency periods and drafts behind them, and with the Patriots maintaining a talented roster despite considerable offseason departures, the AFC East has the makings of an intriguing division in 2019 — despite the facts that Jets fans are a bit down following the draft, and that New England is still the overwhelming favorite to repeat as champions for the eleventh straight year.If you are interested in participating in our FanPulse survey, please click here! Draft update: Patriots trade up, draft DE EDTShareTweetShareShare2019 NFL Draft: 3 reasons why the Patriots drafted Maryland DE Byron CowartJohn David Mercer-USA TODAY SportsThe New England Patriots traded up in the fifth round to select Maryland defensive lineman Byron Cowart with the 159th overall pick in the draft. Let’s take a closer look at the developmental edge rusher to find out why New England decided to invest in him.Developmental upsideThe first word that comes to mind when describing Cowart is ‘raw.’ While he brings all the necessary physical attributes to the table to develop into a solid rotational option at the next level, he needs to improve his technique and play recognition skills in order to consistently compete against NFL-caliber blockers. What he therefore needs more than anything else at this point in his career are coaching and time.Pats Pulpit reacts to the Byron Cowart pickSubscribe to the Pats Pulpit podcast for more draft reactions! The first, he certainly will get in New England: Cowart will learn from one of the NFL’s best coaching staffs and also from veteran players such as Michael Bennett and Deatrich Wise Jr. The time he receives, on the other hand, might depend on his development and whether or not the club thinks he is worth keeping around through roster cuts — the practice squad might be a good destination for Cowart to further work on refining his skills.Positional versatilityAt 6’3, 298 pounds , Cowart has the size to both line up on the edge and the interior. Moving inside might actually be a good move given his skill set: while he is not the quickest player, he does attack the pocket with excellent power and could therefore have a future in the NFL as an interior sub-pass rusher in the mold of Adam Butler. In this sense, Cowart is a classic Patriots pick.Low risk-high reward investmentEven though the Patriots traded up to get him, Cowart is far from a lock to make the team. His roster outlook will likely depend on his development over the next few months and whether or not he can become a more polished defender. If he does, New England might have found a diamond in the rough in the fifth round of the draft. But even if not, the 159th selection hardly can be considered a wasted pick.At the end of the day, picking Cowart is a calculated gamble on the Patriots’ part — one that could pay solid dividends if the Maryland product is able to work through his technical shortcomings.
